Women’s soccer nationals returning to UVic in 2019
Fresh off hosting the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship, the University of Victoria is gearing up to welcome another national championship to the Ring Road campus.
U Sports announced this week that UVic will play host to the 2019 women’s soccer national championship tournament Nov. 7-10 at Centennial Stadium.
Tracy David’s Vikes will welcome seven other top university soccer teams from around the country.
UVic also hosted the U Sports national women’s soccer championship in 2012 with the Vikes earning the bronze medal.
“We are excited to be hosting the 2019 U Sports women’s soccer championship at the University of Victoria,” David said in a statement.
“It will be a tremendous opportunity for our local soccer community to experience the highest quality of women’s soccer.”
Montgomery earns NCAA honour
Victoria Highlanders defender Callum Montgomery capped his university career off in style this week, being named an NCAA Academic All-American after a stand-out season at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
Montgomery is the ninth UNC-Charlotte player to earn All-American honours in the program’s history.
This past season, Montgomery, who recently was named firstteam United Soccer Coaches Association All-Southeast Region, earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year honours. He earned first-team All-Conference USA honours as well as being named to the Conference USA All-Tournament team. Montgomery is also a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is awarded to the top player in collegiate soccer.
This season, Montgomery anchored a 49ers defence that recorded thirteen shutouts including 10 at Transamerica Field. He played an integral role in helping the 49ers defence record over 1,000 minutes of play at Transamerica Field without conceding a goal. The senior defender was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week two times this season.
Santa Slam invades Mount Doug
The high school basketball season is off and running and Mount Douglas Secondary will be in the spotlight this week.
The Rams host the annual senior boys Santa Slam tournament starting today and running through Saturday.
Mount Doug gets things started at 1 p.m. today with a quarter-final matchup against the Reynolds Roadrunners. That’s followed by Mark Isfeld against Royal Bay at 2:45 p.m., Nanaimo vs. G.P. Vanier at 4:30 p.m. and Carihi going up against Wellington at 6:15 p.m.
The semifinals are scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. The gold-medal game goes Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
Lace ’em up and Run Through time
Are you ready to run in the new year?
Runners of Compassion and the University of Victoria will host the 30th Annual Run Through Time event on Dec. 31. The event is a five-kilometre or three-kilometre run/walk that helps raise funds for Shoes for Youth, a program that assists the underprivileged with footwear.
The course goes around Ring Road and begins at 6 p.m. It’s followed by light refreshments and snacks in the lobby of McKinnon Gym.
Registration can be done online at raceroster.com/events. Family registration is available at Frontrunners locations or in the McKinnon Gym lobby on race day from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Costs before Dec. 21 are $20 for adults and $10 for children. After Dec. 31, it’s $30 for adults and $15 for children.
