Vic PD officer’s sacking after snow incident to be reviewed
A Victoria police officer will get a review of his department’s decision to dismiss him for discreditable conduct.
In a Feb. 13, 2019, incident, Brad Meyer was alleged to have created a traffic hazard by shovelling a significant amount of snow onto a road, and to have behaved in what the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner called “a profane and threatening manner” when two RCMP officers responded to the scene.
The OPCC found that Meyer was “verbally hostile and confrontational.”
In its notice of the review, the OPCC said Meyer reportedly threw snow into oncoming traffic and was swearing at passing vehicles.
When the RCMP officers arrived, he is alleged to have identified himself as a police officer, then made disparaging remarks about one of the officers and about the RCMP.
“After interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence under the oversight of the OPCC, the VicPD issued its determination March 18, 2020, bearing out the allegations of discreditable conduct against Constable Meyer and proposing he be dismissed,” the
OPCC said in a statement Thursday.
Meyer requested a review of the decision to determine whether dismissal was a reasonable penalty.
Police officers are deemed to have committed discreditable conduct under the Police Act when they, while on or off duty, conduct themselves “in a manner that the member knows, or ought to know, would be likely to bring discredit on the municipal department,” the notice of the review said.
Retired provincial court judge Carole Lazar will adjudicate the review, which is not yet scheduled.
