Man in murder case granted bail; court orders house arrest
A Victoria man charged with the second-degree murder of Shawn Campbell in September 2018 has been released on $10,000 bail and a number of conditions, including house arrest.
Nathen Monsour, 33, appeared before Justice Geoff Gaul in B.C. Supreme Court on Monday. Submissions by the Crown and defence and reasons for the judge’s decision to release Monsour cannot be reported because of a publication ban on the bail hearing.
Monsour’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 15.
Saanich police were called to the 3900 block of Carey Road about 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2018, and discovered a man with lifethreatening injuries. He died in hospital four days later.
At the time, Saanich police spokeswoman Sgt. Julie Fast said police believed the attack was targeted, that those involved were known to each other and the public was not at risk.
Saanich police cordoned off areas near a residence on Carey Road in Saanich and a residence on Granderson Road in Langford.
Due to the severity of the man’s injuries, the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit was asked to assist.
Monsour was released on conditions not to have any contact with 17 individuals or with his co-accused, Lee Hart, 38, who remains in custody.
Monsour must remain inside his home, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
He must not go to the 3900 block of Carey Road unless he is with his lawyer. He must not consume alcohol, drugs or any other intoxicating substance except with a medical prescription.
Monsour must not possess any weapons or any knives outside his home, except for preparing and eating food.
He must not possess any hammers outside his home.
