Plane crashes, comes to stop in Nelson grocery-store parking lot

-

NELSON — Two people were injured after a plane crashed and ended up in a grocery store parking lot in Nelson on Monday morning.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Michael Daloise said the plane left the airport’s runway and crashed through a fence before coming to a rest in the parking lot of the Real Canadian Wholesale Club.

He said the two-seater airplane was leaking fuel, which crews managed to contain, but otherwise did not cause much damage in the normally busy parking lot.

Daloise said the department has responded previously to calls for crashed airplanes, but this is the first time he has responded to one outside of the airport’s property.

Two people, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The Transportation Safety Board and the Nelson Police Department are investigating.the crash.
