OUT OF TOWN
A Woman of No Importance Oscar Wilde’s 1893 satire opens on a posh terrace party, where the women of an English town swap rumours about aristocratic relationships, belittle an American visitor and try to fathom why the charismatic Lord Illingworth is still single. In prime Wildean style, the innocuous bash descends into a high-society scandal when Illingworth’s new secretary is revealed to be his illegitimate son. June 25 to Oct. 22; previews May 29 to June 24. From $35. Festival Theatre, 10 Queen’s Parade, Niagaraon-the-Lake, 1-800-511-7429.
The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God Shaw newcomer Natasha Mumba stars as the titular heroine, abandoned by a Christian missionary after asking too many questions about God. Undaunted, she sets out on a mission to find the Lord, but is surprised by how many contradicting deities claim the title. The satire of religion and colonialism was shocking in 1932 and, as this adaptation by Toronto playwright Lisa Codrington proves, is still wildly relevant. June 25 to Sept. 11; previews June 10 to 24. From $35. Court House Theatre, 26 Queen St., Niagara-on-the-Lake, 1-800-511-7429.
All My Sons In Arthur Miller’s 1947 drama, a father faces the repercussions of knowingly sending defective parts to the front lines, a mother refuses to accept the death of her soldier son, and the other son returns from battle to find society’s attitudes unchanged. The stinging anti-war production earned the scorn of government officials in its time but established Miller as one of the 20th century’s most important dramatists. June 1 to Sept. 25; previews to May 31. $25–$115.50. Tom Patterson Theatre, 111 Lakeside Dr., Stratford, 1-800-567-1600.
