Toronto Life

What you loved and loathed last month

-

The Internet loves a cute baby, and our January cover depicting a pint-size yoga practitioner got all the requisite oohs and awws. Among the effusive comments: “What a great cover!” “Love the cover,” “OMG!! This is too cute!!! ” and “This baby looks like Prince George Reaction was more mixed for the package’s contents, which ranged from silent retreats to wellness in the workplace to luxury trappings of the self-care boom…

“TL left out massage, but I think their list is pretty excellent. And my once-small hometown of Binbrook gets a shout-out.”

“A $900 crystal ball isn’t self-care. Toronto Life, do better.”

—Liz Moore, Facebook

“I was excited to see the cover article, ‘A Skeptic’s Guide to SelfCare,’ apparently advocating a skeptical approach to an area in which it is so sorely needed. My surprise gave way to disappointment reading “Superfoods That Don’t Suck.” In touting turmeric as an all-purpose miracle substance, apple cider vinegar as an effective weight loss tool and acai as a potential cure for erectile dysfunction, your critic didn’t exhibit a modicum of critical thinking. If Toronto Life wants to hawk phoney baloney bullshitdu-jour because that’s what its readership likes, cool, but please think twice about making it seem as though your staff are scientifically literate.” —Annelies McConnachie
