. . . and yet a second Ford term looms

-

Re Hume: In Toronto, 2013 began and ended with

disaster, Dec. 30 “Anyone who paid attention knew (Rob Ford) was a loser long before he ran for mayor.” True, but please recall that there was never any credible opposition to his cakewalk to the mayor’s office.

The only opponent with the slightest chance was George Smitherman who failed to offer anything substantial against Ford’s inane gravy/subway train mantra. Mr. Smitherman well deserved his nickname, “furious George,” for his Fordish behaviour as an MPP. And he left two ministries, health and energy and infrastructure, in a sorry state from which they have yet to recover.

Toronto skirted Scylla/George only to run afoul of Charybdis/Rob. To Hume, I say Toronto is no more a “city of fools” than any other metropolis. It was simply, and sadly, our turn to endure simultaneous political and natural disasters from which we must now try to recover. Paul Collier, Toronto I could not agree more with Christopher Hume. One of the things that amazes me is that 40-odd per cent of the people questioned still support Ford for mayor.

With these numbers supporting him, he will probably win the next mayoral election. Hopefully, people who do not normally vote will get the message and get out and vote against him. If not, we will be a laughingstock for another four years. We need a mayor with brains. Bob Cooke, Mississauga Re Toronto’s mayoral marathon kicks off, Jan. 2 While filing his papers to run for mayor again, Rob Ford stated he has been the best mayor in the city’s history. This from a man who’s admitted to smoking crack, driving drunk, hanging out with gang members and lying to the people of Toronto for months.

There have been 64 mayors in Toronto’s history. He’s not only insulted them, he’s an insult to the bad ones. Lorne Stepak, Toronto You have to wonder what kind of people admire a person with his habits, dubious friendships and who openly admits to lying to the citizens of Toronto. Toronto deserves better. Diane Sullivan, Toronto As the city prepares for a tumultuous election year, the possibility that Rob Ford could win again looms before us. His delusional belief that so many people support him, just because they want photo-ops or bobblehead dolls, is pathetic. Those who support him do so because they have only their own selfish, selfserving interests at heart. Karin McLean, Toronto Re A look back at Rob Ford’s worldwide apology

tour, Jan. 1 Rosie DiManno’s increasingly piquant columns are perhaps the only positive thing to emerge from the Ford Brothers’ endless reign of error. “The Self-Righteous Brothers.” Priceless. Michael Lennick, Toronto
