PROSPECTS FOR PEAVY

The Red Sox did well in trading two months of Peavy to the Giants. They obtained LH Edwin Escobar, 22, and RH Heath Hembree, who has closing potential. Escobar is 3-8 with a 5.11 ERA in 20 starts at Triple-A Fresno, while Hembree was 1-3 with 18 saves and a 3.89 ERA in 41 games.

LOW EXPECTATIONS

The last time the Sox were above .500 was May 14 (20-19), just a halfgame out of first place. Since then they’re 28-38 after Sunday’s 3-2 win over the red-hot Rays. Richard Griffin
