Sword fight leaves one man dead, another hurt

- ETHAN LOU STAFF REPORTER

A downtown fight that apparently involved a samurai sword has left one man dead and another in hospital.

Toronto Paramedic Services said a 40-year-old man was found stabbed in the chest in an apartment at Jarvis and Carlton Sts., while a 66-year-old man was found stabbed with a samurai sword just 200 metres outside.

Paramedics said the two stabbings were “linked” through a fight at the apartment, where the younger man was found shortly after 6:30 p.m. with a “single, penetrating wound” on the left side of his chest.

The 40-year-old man was reportedly found without vital signs when responders first arrived. Paramedics said they eventually found a pulse and took the man to St. Michael’s Hospital.

But by 7:50 p.m., he had been pronounced dead.

The older man was found at about 6:40 p.m. near Church and Carlton Sts. He was also taken to St. Michael’s hospital.

Paramedics said that his injuries were serious, but non-life-threatening.

However, they were later deemed “very critical.”

Police have not released any information regarding charges in the stabbings.
