Shrine game: Hall-worthy lineup

-

The Canadian Football Hall of Fame has made some glaring omissions over the years. Here are a few:

KENT AUSTIN

Position: quarterback Played for Roughriders (1987-93), Lions (1994), Argonauts (1995), Blue Bombers (1996)

Career highlight: 1989 Grey Cup

MVP

Why he should get in: Austin, 51, now head coach of the Tiger-Cats, was one of the CFL’s top QBs but overshadowed at the time by Doug Flutie. He won four Grey Cup rings: two as a player, one as head coach, one as offensive co-ordinator.

CHRIS SCHULTZ

Position: offensive tackle Played for Dallas Cowboys (198385), Argonauts (1986-94)

Career highlights: Two-time CFL all-star (1987-88), 1991 Grey Cup winner

Why he should get in: It’s the Canadian Football (not CFL) Hall of Fame, which means Schultz’s NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys should get consideration. Schultz, 55, now works as a football analyst at TSN.

DICK THORNTON

Positions: defensive back/receiver Played for Blue Bombers (1961-66), Argonauts (1967-72)

Career highlights: Three-time CFL all-star, two-time Grey Cup winner

Why he should be in: Tricky Dick, who died in December at age 75, was one of the best defensive backs of his era. When he retired, Thornton had scored more defensive TDs than any CFL player in history — four in one season with Winnipeg. Thornton even took a few snaps at QB.

HANK ILESIC

Position: Punter/kicker Played for Eskimos (1977-82), Argonauts (1983-89, 1990-93), Tiger-Cats (1994-95), Lions (1998), Eskimos (2001) and Renegades (2005)

Career highlights: seven-time Grey Cup champion, two-time CFL all-star

Why he should be in: Ilesic, now 55, made the CFL right out of high school and was a star at 17 in his hometown of Edmonton. In just his second year he led the league in punting. In 1978, at age 19, his punting helped the Eskimos to a Grey Cup victory.

CARL BRAZLEY

Position: defensive back Played for Alouettes (1980-81), Rough Riders (1981-82), Argonauts (1983-92)

Career highlights: five-time CFL all-star, two-time Grey Cup champion (1983, 1991)

Why he should get in: Brazley, now 57, was heart and soul of the Argos’ secondary, a superior tackler and ball thief. He ranks fourth in Argo history in interceptions with 37, and was the defensive MVP of the 1983 Grey Cup. Curtis Rush
