Crown alleges public picked up the tab for these expenses

-

$300 on hair and makeup: Duffy allegedly billed $300 for hair and makeup services. Donald Bayne, Duffy’s defence lawyer, said the charge stemmed from the G8 summit and that he used the same makeup artist as Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Bayne joked that Duffy couldn’t have billed the Senate for hairstyling, because he has no hair. Duffy’s lawyer says some of the expense disputes are caused by vague Senate rules.

$500 for volunteers: Duffy paid a volunteer — who had no expectation of remuneration — $500, according to the Crown.

$8,000 to see a play: The Crown alleges Duffy billed the Senate for personal travel expenses, including a trip to see his daughter perform in a play, a trip to visit a newborn grandchild, and funerals.

$3,142 to work a private gig: The Crown says Duffy claimed travel expenses to give a onehour speech at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa. The problem? It wasn’t part of his Senate duties and he was paid $11,000 for the speech. Duffy’s lawyer argues all travel expenses for the public are public expenses, even if political in nature.

$64,000 to hire friends and family: The Crown claims Duffy paid $64,000 to former CTV colleague Gerald Donahue for media monitoring and writing services. The Crown also accuses Duffy of paying his cousin in P.E.I. to do the same thing.

A puppy? The Crown alleges Duffy billed the Senate for a trip to a dog show with former MP Dean Del Mastro, in which he attempted to buy a puppy. No word on how much this trip cost, or whether he in fact did acquire a furry friend. Star staff
