Leafs: The highs, lows of Dave Nonis’ tenure

- Mark Zwolinski

Some of the ups and downs during former Leafs general manager Dave Nonis’ career in Toronto:

Dec. 4, 2008: Leaves Anaheim to join former GM and longtime colleague, Brian Burke, in Toronto as senior vice-president and director of hockey operations. Jan. 9, 2013: After Burke’s firing, Nonis is named GM of the Leafs, becoming the 15th one in franchise history. Jan. 20, 2013: Signs forward Joffrey Lupul to a five-year, $26.25-million (U.S.) contract extension. June 23, 2013: In what may have been his best trade, acquires goaltender Jonathan Bernier from the L.A. Kings for Ben Scrivens, Matt Frattin and a second-round pick. July 5, 2013: Signs free agent David Clarkson to a seven-year, $36.75million deal. Initially greeted positively, the deal would eventually be considered one of Nonis’ worst. July 5, 2013: Signs forward Tyler Bozak to a five-year, $21-million deal. Oct. 1, 2013: Signs Phil Kessel to an eight-year, $64-million contract extension, banking on a continued high production rate from the forward, who had scored 30 or more goals in his first five seasons in the NHL. Dec. 30, 2013: Signs Dion Phaneuf to a seven-year, $49-million contract extension. May 28, 2014: Extends head coach Randy Carlyle’s contract through the 2016-17 season but releases assistant coaches Greg Cronin, Scott Gordon and Dave Farrish. July 29, 2014: Signs Jake Gardiner to a five-year, $20.25-million contract extension. That completes a core of Phaneuf, Kessel, Lupul, Bozak, Clarkson and Gardiner, who Nonis inked to more than $217 million collectively through the life of their contracts. Jan. 6, 2015: Fires Carlyle. Jan. 7, 2015: Names assistant coach Peter Horachek head coach, on an interim basis, for the remainder of the season. Feb. 26, 2015: Trades David Clarkson to Columbus for Nathan Horton. The move erases Clarkson’s burdensome contract off the cap and garners praise.
