Recipe for a royal makeover

Charlotte Tilbury’s top tips cover shaving, men’s makeup and advice fit for the Queen

- LINDA BARNARD MOVIE WRITER

Celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury shares her thoughts on women shaving their faces (bad), men’s makeup (good) and who she’d like to have in her makeup chair.

Men and makeup “Yes, you are starting to see it more and more and with skin care . . . you don’t have to be a metrosexual. These days it’s an alpha male kind of market. It’s more with skin care and it’s progressed to a makeup that’s a hybrid.”

Women shaving their faces “Gosh, that’s the worst thing you can do. They will end up with stubble because it really does, the more you shave, the thicker the hair grows back and the more brittle it grows back so they’ll end up with a bit of grizzle on their face. It’s a really bad trend.”

Future of makeup “I think you will see a lot more technology in makeup, technological advances.

“Cosmetics will have more technology inside them . . . a machine to give a facelift or an eye lift at home, morphing foundation and eye shadows.”

Royal makeover Tilbury would love to do the makeup for Queen Elizabeth II, saying her products “could make her skin look more radiant.”

Inspired by the strong, lip-defining lipstick the Queen wore as a young woman, “I could give her more of a youthful, fabulous mouth, the way you think of in the old pictures of the Queen.”

Makeup for film When you are doing makeup for photography, “they love the (dewy look),” but for films “the lighting is incredibly unflattering most of the time so you actually need a lot more powder.”

As for HD (high-definition), “You see more than you do in real life. I really hate HD, I really do.”

Bad makeup “I hate it when I see (women) wearing I call them parrot colours; multicoloured eye shadows that aren’t colour harmonies, that don’t work together.

“Makeup is not a mask. It should accentuate someone’s beauty.”

Caitlyn Jenner “We saw in the (Vanity Fair) photo shoot she was using my Air Brush Flawless Finish (powder). She’s Caitlyn, she’s a woman now, she’s using my products already. It’s amazing and it’s wonderful to see her. I know all the Kardashians use my products, but obviously Caitlyn’s now a woman and (s)he’s been transformed . . . (her) skin is probably more, having been a man, it’s a different type of skin.” This interview has been edited and condensed.
