Archer Jay Lyon will be allowed to compete in the Pan Am Games after settling a dispute with his sport’s governing body.

Lyon was facing possible expulsion from the team for criticizing Archery Canada on Facebook.

In a joint press release from Lyon and Archery Canada, the archer apologized for his social media post.

“Mr. Lyon concedes that he reacted poorly and in haste to a recent high performance decision, and that he could have provided input in a far more positive fashion,” the statement reads.

He also issued an apology on Facebook. Lyon’s original comments stemmed from Archery Canada’s decision to exclude Kateri Vrakking from the team. The decision was reversed after she alleged age discrimination.

Lyon’s post called the organization’s leadership into question and suggested female athletes weren’t given equal treatment.

“It is Archery Canada’s intent to focus its attention on enabling optimal performance of all of its archers throughout this summer’s impor- tant competitions, including the Pan/Para American Games (sic) and World Championships,” the organization said in the joint press release.

“Furthermore, Archery Canada is committed to leveraging recent incidents to improve upon its communication with its athletes in relation to all sporting matters.”

Reached by phone on Tuesday, Lyon was in Salt Lake City training with a teammate and coach. “I think a fair outcome was reached,” he said. “It was settled in a timely fashion and has given me enough time to focus on training.”

Archery Canada executive director Scott Ogilvie said he is glad to move “onwards and upwards” after the incident. “I know it’s been a distraction for Jay. Now he’s able to focus on the Games and the task at hand and, along with his teammates, perform and hopefully reach the podium,” Ogilvie said.

“We are moving forward and supporting Jay and his male and female teammates as we have all along.”

The Pan Am archery competition will take place July 14-18.
