Large sinkhole opens on Gerrard St.
Construction crews were working Sunday to repair a sinkhole six metres long and the width of a road lane that opened on Gerrard St., just east of Greenwood Ave.
It was linked to a water-main break in the area at about 6 a.m. Sunday. Sinkholes are caused when soil or rock deep beneath the road’s surface is washed away. Toronto experiences 20 to 50 sinkholes a year.
