Retired Sen. Lowell Murray, who was appointed to the Senate on the advice of former prime minister Joe Clark in 1979, did not join the new Conservative caucus when the Canadian Alliance and Progressive Conservative parties merged in 2003. Murray continued to identify as a Progressive Conservative and was sitting as an Independent senator when he retired in 2011. A Sept. 16 article about senators repaying travel expenses incorrectly referred to him as a Conservative senator.
