Plenty of earthquake­s occur with little impact in remote areas. But here are a few close in range to the one in Chile: Where: Haiti (epicentre was just 25 kilometres outside Port-au-Prince) When: Jan. 12, 2010 Size: 7.0 magnitude Casualties: 100,000 people died (according to the U.S. Geological Survey); the Haitian government estimates as many as 316,000. The Presidenti­al Palace, National Assembly building and Port-au-Prince Cathedral were destroyed. Where: Pakistan (epicentre was 80 kilometres northeast of Islamabad) When: Oct. 8, 2005 Size: 7.6 magnitude Casualties: 86,000 people; worst-hit areas were Pakistan-administer­ed Kashmir, the western and southern parts of the Kashmir valley and Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province. Where: Biobio region, Chile (epicentre was 34 kilometres off the coast of Nuble Province) When: 2010 Size: 8.8 magnitude Casualties: 523 Where: Sistan Baluchista­n, Iran (close to Pakistani border) When: April 17, 2013 Size: 7.8 magnitude Casualties: 35 (in both Iran and Pakistan)
