Who goes on safari adventures

-

The word safari comes from Swahili, meaning journey or expedition, and from Canada, the long flight to Kenya is just that. Kenyan safaris are also an opportunity to experience wildlife in its natural habitat and connect with the land.

A Kenyan safari is not for everyone, however. The long connecting flights can be tough for young families and the cost can be prohibitive for some. With two short weeks of vacation a year, Canadians usually opt for a cost-effective quick trip south. For this reason, the most popular guests on Kenya safaris are in one of two categories and I met both: The Millennial Honeymooner Instead of registering for toasters and glassware, many young couples are opting for contributions to their honeymoon.

Honeymooners usually take off more time than they would for a regular vacation and put in more thought, planning and money: Cue the safari.

Jeff and Nicole Martin chose to safari for their honeymoon, taking three glorious weeks to explore the savannah.

“There is nothing like the romance of a safari,” said Nicole. “On the savannah it is just the two of you ex- ploring. We saw the most beautiful sunsets, walked through stunning landscapes, slept under a huge starry sky and truly got away from the rest of the world. There is nothing like it.” The Baby Boomers Richard and Janet Dunham are baby boomers from England. They are both doctors who vacation in Africa or Asia at least twice a year, looking for out-of-the-ordinary travel experiences. This was their third trip to Kicheche camps in Kenya.

“We have the time to dedicate to longer trips,” said Richard. “We love to travel and now we can enjoy these amazing experiences in style and comfort.”

The Dunham’s aren’t alone. According to Kenya’s tourism board, baby boomers are currently the highest demographic of visitors to Kenya. With an increased marketing budget focusing on North America, Kenya is hoping to see the numbers increase even further. Natalie Preddie
