Typhoon Mujigae hits Guangdong
Astrong typhoon roared into Guangdong province and the resort island of Hainan on Sunday, bringing powerful winds and heavy rain after leaving one dead and 30 fishermen missing in the Philippines. Nearly 200,000 people were evacuated before Typhoon Mujigae — “rainbow” in Korean — made landfall near Zhanjiang just after 2 p.m. Five hours later its centre was 460 kilometres west of Hong Kong and moving steadily inland. The National Meteorological Centre warned as much as 280 millimetres of rain could fall in some places. As of Sunday evening, there were no reports of injuries.
