MLB: Puig dodges league discipline

-

Major League Baseball says it will not discipline Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig for his involvement in an incident in a Miami area club last November.

MLB said Wednesday it investigated and did not find any witnesses who supported an assault allegation. MLB said video evidence did not support the allegation, and Puig and his sister denied there was an assault.

“Both Puig and his sister denied that an assault occurred, and the available video evidence did not support the allegation,” MLB said. “Barring the receipt of any new information or evidence, no discipline will be imposed on Puig in connection with the alleged incident.”

Puig was among three players investigated under the sport’s new domestic violence policy. Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman agreed to a 30-game suspension without pay, and Colorado shortstop Jose Reyes was suspended with pay pending an April 4 trial on a charge of abusing his wife. FAMILY FIRST: White Sox designated hitter Adam LaRoche announced his plans to leave baseball after executive vice-president Ken Williams asked him to limit the amount of time LaRoche’s teenage son spends in the clubhouse, Williams said Wednesday.

LaRoche’s son, Drake, 14, spent much of last year with the Sox and even had his own locker in the home clubhouse at U.S. Cellular Field. He was with the team much of this spring, including Tuesday, when LaRoche announced he planned to step away from baseball.

Williams said he felt he needed to draw the line somewhere, as other players might have similar requests. He said he would still have made the decision even in light of the results. SETBACK: Right-hander Lance McCullers won’t start the season in the Houston Astros’ rotation because of shoulder pain.

Manager A.J. Hinch made it official Wednesday. The 22-year-old McCullers has been shut down until the discomfort subsides in his throwing shoulder and did not pitch in a spring training game.
