CEREBRAL CRITTERS

Sheldon and Spencer have a lot on their minds,

- JANE WELOWSZKY SPECIAL TO THE STAR

“Sheldon is OK with how he is because it’s good to love yourself. Spencer is more Uh, I’m better than you.” SHANNON BARRY OWNERS OF TWO GUINEA PIGS

Most adoring pet owners would do anything for their cherished companions, but what if they could speak for their furry, feathered or finned friends and tell us what they’re thinking?

To find out, we’re putting pet owners to the test with the personality questionnaire made famous by French novelist Marcel Proust.

When Shannon Barry decided to add a couple of skinny pigs (hairless guinea pigs) to her family, the busy ER nurse was surprised to discover she has as much fun with two, named Sheldon and Spencer, as she does with her chocolate lab, Sasha.

“They’re so social, I had no idea,” says Barry.

Sheldon and Spencer are budding Instagram sensations with a rapidly growing Facebook fan base.

They’re famous for their PSAs (Piggie Service Announcements) celebrating random holidays. The one they’re most excited about is the (unofficial) first annual Guinea Pig Appreciation Day on July 16.

Aside from the glitz and glamour of Internet fame, Sheldon and Spencer believe in giving back and embrace their role as SPCA-certified therapy animals. In their down time, they enjoy relaxing at the cottage and indulging in watermelon rinds (hold the mushy fruit part), their favourite summertime treat.

While Barry doesn’t have immediate plans to expand their online presence, there is something she has in mind. “I would love to go on Ellen,” she divulges. “That would be my ultimate achievement.”

What is Sheldon’s current state of mind?

Laid back and calm.

What is Spencer’s current state of mind?

He’s a little crazy. I think his mind spins a lot. He’s very in the moment — it’s all about what’s happening right now.

Who or what is the greatest love of Sheldon’s life?

His vegetables (celery in particular).

Who or what is the greatest love of Spencer’s life?

His brother. What is Sheldon’s greatest fear? Getting his nails cut.

We take him to the vet to have it done but you’d think they were cutting his feet off by the noise he makes.

What does Spencer regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Having a bath. He stands on the towel in the shallow end of the tub and hopes it’s over soon.

Who is Sheldon’s hero of fiction?

Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory — his namesake. They’re both quirky and caring, and have the same personality type.

Who is Spencer’s hero of fiction?

James Bond. Classy, distinguished, still an action hero and good with the ladies.

Which talent would Sheldon most like to have?

He’d like to be able to talk. He only has a limited vocabulary — happy, angry, sort of content.

He often looks like he’s deep in thought and I think he’s got a lot to say.

If Spencer could change one thing about himself, what would it be?

Nothing, because he thinks he’s perfect.

Sheldon is OK with how he is because it’s good to love yourself. Spencer is more Uh, I’m better than you.

Which historical figure does Sheldon most identify with?

Gandhi.

He’s a kind man, believes in nonviolence, is very spiritual and reflective, and he’s a vegan.

Who are Spencer’s heroes in real life?

Ellen (DeGeneres) because she’s a fun free spirit, loves animals and her veggies.

He would be the one dancing.

What is Sheldon’s motto?

Have courage, be kind and eat your vegetables.

What is Spencer’s motto?

Just have fun, and eat.

If you think you know what your animal companion is thinking, email petpsyche@gmail.com and tell us why they should be profiled.
