Black moon will put stars in your eyes on Friday

- PETER EDWARDS STAFF REPORTER

Friday is your chance to experience a relatively rare lunar event: a black moon.

A black moon is the second new moon in a calendar month. There hasn’t been one since March 2014 and there won’t be another until July 2019.

That said, don’t expect to actually see the moon when this happens at 8:11 p.m. eastern daylight time.

That’s because during the new moon, which occurs every 29.5 days, the side of the moon lit by the sun is facing away from Earth.

You will see plenty of stars, weather permitting. Moonless skies appear darker, making new moon nights a prime time for star gazing.

People in the Eastern Hemisphere won’t experience the black moon on Friday, but they will get one either Oct. 30 or Halloween night.

A black moon is basically the opposite of a blue moon — the term given to the second full moon in a calendar month.

Some members of the Wicca religion believe that spells cast during a black moon are even more powerful than they’d otherwise be.

Some fundamentalist Christian websites have also heralded it as a sign of the impending end times.

Pop-culture references to the phenomenon include a hip-hop band that calls itself Black Moon.
