Cundill Prize finalists announced

An award-winning American historian is among the three finalists for the lucrative Cundill Prize being awarded in Toronto next week.

Thomas W. Laqueur, a professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley, is in contention for The Work of the Dead: A Cultural History of Mortal Remains.

David Wootton, anniversar­y professor of history at the U.K.’s University of York, was nominated for The Invention of Science: A New History of the Scientific Revolution.

British historian Andrea Wulf was recognized for The Invention of Nature: Alexander Von Humboldt’s New World.

The winner will be revealed Nov. 17.

Comedy star Amy Schumer has postponed several Canadian standup dates due to illness, including a Wednesday night show in Toronto, and Thursday and Friday dates in Ottawa and Montreal. A new T.O. show is scheduled for Feb. 16 and Live Nation will honour tickets from the cancelled show.

Tapestry Opera has a new general manager. Jaime Martino, a dancer who was previously director of operations for Pride Toronto, will join the opera company Nov. 24. Also joining the Tapestry Opera staff is Linda Rogers as manager of external relations. Rogers has held senior positions at the Buffalo Philharmon­ic Orchestra, Opera Ontario, Soundstrea­ms Canada and, most recently, VIBE Arts.
