Star, staff raise over $170K for United Way

- HINA ALAM STAFF REPORTER

Toronto Star employees dug deep — and then some — to help the United Way.

Employees raised $120,661.63 for this year’s fundraising campaign for United Way of Toronto and York Region, blowing past the goal of $100,000.

Thanks to a corporate donation of $50,000, the Star and its employees contributed $170,661.63.

“We’re very proud of what we’ve accomplished together,” said Torstar president and CEO David Holland. The campaign’s objective is strengthening the community, Holland said.

Daniele Zanotti, CEO of United Way, Toronto and York Region said the Star and its employees are helping build a better community by aiding United Way and the many social agencies it funds.

Those agencies, Zanotti says, help many people, including new Canadi- ans who are adapting to life in Toronto.

“There’s nothing more powerful than a sense of belonging,” Zanotti said.

He was describing a family which left El Salvador as refugees 15 or 20 years ago.

Today, included in that family are a lawyer, an architect and a business owner.

The family attributes that success to the power of community and belonging, said Zanotti.
