Critique of elites missed mark

-

Re Revolt is against ruling elite, Letter Dec. 1 Reader Al Veltman made some bold, yet incorrect statements. More than one half of the media he calls “alt-left” (CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS) were actually Donald Trump’s greatest allies as they followed his every word and tweet, rarely questioning the vulgarity or validity of those words.

As for the “educated elite, especially instructors in schools and universities,” I have a question: When you or your loved ones have the need for medical care, do you go to an amateur or an educated doctor? The question can be repeated in various forms for veterinarian, carpenter, mechanic, engineer, and so on.

Education is one of the characteristics of a civilized society and the stalwart against dictatorship. I just hope Canada’s elite education system, full of elite educators, is strong enough to stem this tide of hatred and lies. Brian MacIsaac, Uxbridge

Thanks to Al Veltman for providing me with my morning laugh with his rant about some new phenomenon called the “alt-left elite.” At first I thought he was serious. But when he began to lump pretty much all media, entertainers and just about anyone with more than a high school education into what he demonizes as an “alt-left elite,” I realized he was likely just auditioning for a role as comedy writer on Saturday Night Live.

When he goes on to drag out tired Trumpisms like “drain the swamp” and “make our country great again” and Kellie Leitchisms like “vetting immigrants,” he is clearly having a good laugh at anyone who takes him seriously.

The only part of his letter that rings true is when he concludes by saying “we (whoever “we” is) are revolting.” Amen to that. Ron Brown, Toronto
