U.S. President Donald Trump, master distractor

-

Re To distract and dominate, dangle many shiny objects, March 5 It is rather disconcerting that Donald Trump continues to come up with yet more implausible insinuations to distract attention from situations that should be front and centre before the public. What is even more disconcerting is that everyone jumps onto that distraction, feeding into his plan.

Mr. Trump is the ultimate carny, spouting wild claims to draw the public to his sideshow. He is also a master of the shell game, moving the shells around so that you don’t remember which one actually hides the pea. And there are many peas he wishes to hide!

Bit by bit, this new U.S. administration is dismantling the very fabric of the American way of life and his base is falling in line to follow this pied piper.

I believe it is time to ignore the distractions and downplay the rants. The media, including newspapers such as yours, and all the television news channels, should relegate Mr. Trump’s tweets and rants to the bottom of the news pile. Concentrate, instead, on what he and his administration is actually doing. What he says is not important; it is what he does that counts! Beverley Bleackley, Mississauga

Donald Trump has not been president for even two months but already the writing is on the wall.

It is time for the grown-ups in the Republican Party, if there are any left, to put country ahead of party and remove Trump from office. Whether it is through impeachment or invoking the 25th Amendment of the Constitution to remove a president who is incapable of fulfilling the duties of the office is up to them. But it must be done and the sooner the better.

This horror show of an administration simply cannot continue. John Bruce, Niagara Falls, Ont. Re Why Trump’s America is Lost in Space, March 4 For Americans who did not vote for Donald Trump, the country we knew doesn’t seem so much lost in space as caught in a particularly dark, lengthy and perilous episode of The Twilight Zone, without Rod Serling’s cigarette-accented calming reassurance that what we just viewed was merely fiction.

Still, as scary and awful as things appear at this moment for many, including the various groups now considered enemies of the people, light and hope still exist.

We who seek light and hope must work as we have never worked before to ensure we do not become permanently lost in any real-life episode of any twilight zone. Or worse, to become permanently lost in space. Mary Stanik, Oak Creek, Wis.

To date, this “tweetle-dumb” president has shown himself to be an embarrassment to the good people of the United States.

He has relentlessly attempted to convince Americans that factual, verifiable information is somehow less believable than that which is based on his notion that truth is simply what he can get people to believe (otherwise known as alternative facts/lies).

Furthermore, this codswallop has been sanctioned by his cult of Republican mealy-mouthed sycophants.

If the Greeks were correct in saying “a man’s character is his fate” then Mr. President, you’re in for a choppy ride! Ronald Walsh, Ajax

Re What trumps a once-hated president? An even worse one, March 5 Star entertainment writer Vinay Menon shares some whimsical moments about the metamorphosis of once-reviled expresident George W. Bush. He then points to President Trump’s grumpy reputation as the best thing to happen to Bush.

An inner voice might be contemplating how a future American president might make Trump’s legacy look good. A frightening thought for some, or just sheer paranoia? Robert Ariano, Scarborough
