Husband arrested in wife’s death
Ajax woman, 27, was nine months pregnant; baby did not survive attack
Durham police have arrested a man suspected of killing his wife in Pickering Friday night.
Nicholas Tyler Baig, 25, was wanted in connection with the death of Arianna Goberdhan.
Baig was apprehended in Markham on Saturday evening, police said.
Goberdhan, 27, of Ajax, was found dead at a house on Winville Rd. in north Pickering on Friday after Durham police responded to a call about a domestic disturbance at about 9:45 p.m.
Goberdhan was nine months pregnant and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body showed “obvious signs of trauma,” according to police.
Police said the unborn baby did not survive.
The couple had recently married, according to Kyle Limeback, Goberdhan’s cousin-in-law.
Limeback, who photographed the wedding, said he is “just at a loss for words.”
“I’m just torn up right now,” he said. “It’s kind of hard to even think of what is going on.”
Police vehicles, including a forensic identification unit truck, lined the street outside the Winville Rd. house on Saturday afternoon.
Neighbours said they were shocked and saddened.
“All night I couldn’t sleep,” said Shazia Sherzai, who lives next door.
Sherzai said Baig lives in the house along with his brother and parents.
Like Sherzai’s family, the next-door neighbours moved into their home about three years ago after the houses were built, she said.
Sherzai said she was friendly with her neighbours, a middle-aged couple, and always enjoyed her inter- actions with their grown children.
“They had a very nice heart,” Sherzai said of the family. “I can’t believe that this happened (at) their house.”
Staff Sgt. Peter Cousins said Goberdhan’s next of kin have been notified of her death. He added that Durham police would be discussing with the Crown attorney the possibility of increasing Baig’s charges because the baby did not survive, he said. With files from Alina Bykova and Brennan Doherty
