22-year-old man ID’d as bomber
Police have identified Salman Abedi, 22, as the man who detonated a bomb at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester on Monday.
At least 22 people were killed in the attack, along with Abedi. An estimated 59 were injured.
Chief Constable Ian Hopkins of the Manchester police named Abedi at a press conference Tuesday, but said no other information would be released until the coroner made a formal identification.
Earlier in the day, armed police raided a home in south Manchester, which U.K. electoral rolls showed was the residence of a man named Salman Abedi. Officers also searched the home of Abedi’s brother, the Guardian newspaper reported. Manchester police confirmed to the Star that they have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the attack, but would not release his identity.
A law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the New York Times that Abedi was born in the U.K. to parents who had emigrated from Libya.
The priority for investigators is to determine whether Abedi was acting alone “or as part of a network,” Hopkins said.
Daesh, also known as ISIS or ISIL, claimed responsibility for the attack, though a top U.S. security official said that claim could not be verified.
In a statement to the press, Hopkins cautioned against hateful responses to the attack.
“We understand that feelings are very raw right now and people are bound to be looking for answers,” he said. “However, now, more than ever, it is vital that our diverse communities in Greater Manchester stand together and do not tolerate hate.”
