Relax restrictions in war against terror

-

Re Terror at U.K. concert, May 23 Regrettably, we are once again lamenting the tragedy inflicted on our society by a social miscreant, whatever his motivation. Equally regrettably, we are hearing that this individual was “on the police radar.”

So we have to ask ourselves, and those who protect us, why such individuals had not been apprehended beforehand. We don’t know exactly how many latent terrorists are being watched by authorities; nor do we know how many near misses they have thwarted.

But I suspect that, in many cases, the police may have plenty of suspicions but insufficient evidence to elicit a court warrant to interrogate or detain a person of interest. Perhaps it’s time to lower that bar.

Considering that the safety and well-being of all Canadians are at stake, I believe that, where potential terrorism is suspected, the criteria for obtaining warrants should be relaxed to afford the authorities greater opportunity to stop such acts before they are committed. Ronald Weir, Toronto My heart bleeds for the innocent victims of this horrible and senseless tragedy and I proffer my deepest sympathies to them and to their anguished families.

The situation for Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL) must be getting pretty desperate when it must resort to murdering young girls in a pathetic attempt to terrorize Westerners.

On the contrary, this savage act of sheer barbarism will have the opposite effect, as people witness and better understand the astonishing evil exposed here, which must, for the sake of all civilized humanity, be resolutely defeated. Michael Pravica, Henderson, Nev. It is horrifying to hear about yet another terrorist attack that has claimed the lives of the innocent. The purpose of these heinous acts is very clear: to instill fear in the hearts of people.

Unfortunately, many people continue to get trapped by the misconception that somehow these acts are religiously motivated, which is completely false. No religion promotes such kinds of atrocious behaviour or calls for the blood of innocent people.

Rather, it is political gain that is the motive behind such extremism.

We must refrain from labelling entire groups based on the actions of few and stick together in unfortunate times like this. Fasih Malik, Calgary
