City conveniences in a small-town setting

-

Gerry and Arnie Bergin, like many retirees, wanted to downsize and find a community of like-minded people who enjoy an active lifestyle, and they wanted to be close to their daughter and grandson.

“We wanted a community with well-built single-family bungalows and a clubhouse with lots to do to keep us active and busy. At Stonecroft, we get all of that,” says Arnie.

The Bergins enjoy everything, from geo-caching (adult-style treasure hunts using GPS coordinates), to pickleball and tennis, as well as the Thursday night cocktail parties held in Stonecroft’s 18,000-square-foot clubhouse. With the Nith River winding adjacent to the property, they can also explore their passion for canoeing.

“Many of our residents come from the GTA and are pleasantly surprised by all the amenities, both on-site and in the area,” says Stonecroft by Carey Homes sales manager Mary Laramee. “New Hamburg is only a short walk and it has many stores, fine dining and culture. All the city amenities you’ve grown accustomed to are here, but with a smalltown feel.”

Stonecroft is a short 15-minute drive to hospitals, big-box stores, movies, fine dining, lots of great shops and a medical centre nearby at The Boardwalk. “At Stonecroft, you feel like you’re in the big city, but you don’t have to deal with it,” says Laramee.

Stonecroft’s recreation centre is “the heart and hub of the community,” according to Laramee. “There are at least 60 organized activities and leagues. We’ve got something for everyone, and if we don’t have what you’re looking for, we encourage you to start a group.” Golfing, travel club, classic car club and even a ball-hockey club are some of the activities offered to keep fit.

Stonecroft is a community of two- bedroom, two-bathroom bungalows (some with dens) built by Carey Homes. All the homes are open concept with high ceilings and huge windows for a modern, spacious feel. “You don’t have to feel as if you’re giving up the feeling of a large home,” explains Laramee. Luxury extras that come standard — granite, hardwood, video doorbells, large covered decks and two-car garages — are just some of the features of a Carey-built home.

Like the Bergins, what first attracted Val and Alan Lindsay to Stonecroft was proximity to their family. “We love the location — New Hamburg is only a short walk away. Our home is everything we want and was ready as promised on our move-in date. While we look after our own yards and gardens, the common areas are well maintained. But what really makes it a pleasure to live here are the people. We have great neighbours — they’re very friendly,” says Val. “And you can feel totally safe walking alone at night. This is a community and we all watch out after one another.”
