Come From Away increases its awards haul Briefly

Canada’s Come From Away has won three Drama Desk Awards, including Outstandin­g Musical.

The Sept. 11-inspired production was awarded the top prize at a ceremony held at New York’s Town Hall theatre on Sunday night.

Canadian husband-and-wife duo Irene Sankoff and David Heinwon Outstandin­g Book of a Musical, and Jenn Colella won Outstandin­g Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of real-life retired airline Capt. Beverley Bass.

Now in their 62nd year, the Drama Desk Awards are billed as the sole major New York theatre honours where Broadway, off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway production­s compete in the same categories. Come From Away has already won Outstandin­g Musical honours from New York’s Outer Critics Circle Awards and the Helen Hayes Awards in Washington, D.C.

Broadway’s biggest prize could still be in store for the Canadian musical when the Tony Awards are handed out on June 11.

Wonder Woman was even mightier than expected. Warner Bros. has revised the film’s weekend box office estimate up to $103.1 million (U.S.) from a $100.5-million North American haul.

Rogers Media is expanding its CityNews newscast to Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Montreal. Local versions of the Toronto mainstay will start airing in Edmonton and Winnipeg on Sept. 4, and in Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary in winter 2018.

Kevin James is getting back together with former TV wife Leah Remini on his CBS sitcom Kevin Can Wait. Remini played his character’s wife on The King of Queens, which ran on CBS for nine seasons from 1998 to 2007. On Kevin Can Wait, she replaces Erinn Hayes, who called the news she wouldn’t be back for Season 2 “very sad.”

Dan Aykroyd is criticizin­g the director of last year’s Ghostbuste­rs remake for spending too much money to make the film. Without mentioning Paul Feig’s name, Aykroyd told the British chat show Sunday Brunch that the director didn’t want to shoot scenes Aykroyd and others told him were necessary, and then had to do reshoots that cost an additional $30 million to $40 million.

A publicist for Jerry Lewis says the comedian is recovering after being treated at a Las Vegas hospital for aurinary tract infection. The 91-yearold comedian and actor was taken to the hospital on Friday so that he could get antibiotic­s immediatel­y to treat the condition. Publicist Candi Cazau says he is expected to be released shortly.

Officials in Portugal have ordered an investigat­ion into claims that one of the country’s most cherished historic monuments was damaged during the shooting of a film by former Monty Python star Terry Gilliam. Gilliam says allegation­s his crew damaged the 12th century Convent of Christ are “ignorant nonsense.”
