World premieres key for dance lineup
World premieres featuring ballet choreographer Robert Binet and Irish dance champion Michaela Hinds are part of the third season of Fall for Dance North.
The three-night festival returns to Toronto’s Sony Centre Oct. 4 to 6. Tickets are a mere $15 and go on sale Wednesday.
The focus this season is “on celebrating Canadian dancers and choreographers working both here at home and abroad,” artistic director Ilter Ibrahimof said in a news release.
To that end, the festival commissioned Children of Chaos by National Ballet of Canada choreographic associate Binet. The piece is inspired by Renata Adler’s novel Speedboat, set to live excerpts of composer John Kameel Farah’s album Time Sketches and will be performed by Canadians who have made careers abroad.
The other commissioned pieces include Performance: Reflections of an Irish Journey. Choreographed by Yzanne Noone and performed by Hinds, the reigning senior ladies Irish dance world champion.
Another world premiere is 72-Person Ball Passing by Charles Moulton, an escalation of the 1979 postmodern dance “masterpiece” Ball Passing.
New this season will be free programming in the west wing of Union Station from Sept. 16 to Oct. 7. Pro- gram details will be announced Aug. 25.
