Six-hour odyssey also included shooting at cops, carjack attempts

Toronto police say a man will be facing several charges in connection with multiple shootings, attempted carjackings, an assault and a dramatic police chase along Hwy. 400 that occurred in a span of six hours early Wednesday.

The series of events began just after 2 a.m. when police say they responded to a call about a shooting on Herzberg Gardens in North York, Inspector Colin Greenaway said in a news conference.

The circumstances surrounding this incident are not clear but according to Greenaway, the victim of the shooting was the brother of the man that is now in police custody.

No injuries were reported but police say the suspect then fled the scene.

Overnight, police say the suspect then attempted to carjack approximately three vehicles.

Police said the man then approached a fourth victim, a man in his 60s, who he assaulted in the area of 160 Norfinch Dr. in an attempt to steal his car, but after a failed attempt to start the vehicle, the suspect fled on foot.

At approximately 6:30 a.m., a shooting involving the suspect in the area of Steeles Ave. and Norfinch Dr. in North York was reported to police, Greenaway said.

Investigators found a woman in her 50s who had been shot multiple times in a nearby parking lot in an attempted carjacking.

The victim was taken to hospital in serious condition and the suspect fled in her vehicle.

Ashort while later, as the suspect pulled over on the side of a road, police say he came in contact with two officers dressed in plain clothes.

According to Greenaway, the suspect allegedly shot at the officers, who did not return fire. He then sped away, heading toward the morning rush-hour traffic on Hwy. 400.

In a tweet, police said they were in pursuit of a silver Honda Civic.

Footage of the dramatic chase, described by Greenaway as a “tactical following,” shows multiple police cruisers speeding along Hwy. 400 and hitting a car along the way.

As he approached Hwy. 88 and Hwy. 89, west of Bradford, Greenaway said the suspect pulled to the side of the road again.

“He had pulled over and officers thought he was about to give up,” Greenaway said.

Police said the suspect fired at the same two detectives who were shot at earlier, but this time, an officer returned fire and no one was struck.

The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Kristian Jarvis. Toronto police are looking for a second suspect but his connection to the incidents remains unclear

The suspect then continued to drive north as police helicopters hovered above.

When officers reached Highway 11, near Memorial Ave. in Orillia, police say they set up a spike belt but the suspect tried to swerve around it, striking another vehicle. No one was injured in that collision.

Once the Honda stopped, the suspect exited the vehicle, shot at officers and then threw away the gun while running toward a nearby bush, Greenaway said Wednesday afternoon.

At around 7:30 a.m., Toronto police tweeted that the suspect had been taken into custody and a gun had been recovered.

He has been identified as 31-year-old Kristian Jarvis. Police say they are also looking for a second suspect but his connection to the incidents remains unclear.

According to Greenaway, charges are still being determined.
