TORONTO 2017 NAIG OFFICIAL MASCOT

Earlier this year, after a nationwide contest, the official mascot of Toronto 2017 North American Indigenous Games (Toronto 2017 NAIG) was chosen from a design submitted by Indigenous artist Anton Meekis from Deer Lake First Nation, situated in Northern Ontario. The contest was held in celebration of the first time the North American Indigenous Games would be hosted in Ontario, and welcomed hundreds of entries from Indigenous youth.

Plus tôt cette année, suite à un concours pancanadien, la mascotte officielle des Jeux autochtones de l’Amérique du Nord 2017 de Toronto (JAAN 2017 de Toronto) a été choisie à partir d’un projet présenté par l’artiste autochtone Anton Meekis de la Première nation de Deer Lake, située dans le nord de l’Ontario. Le concours a été organisé pour célébrer la première édition des Jeux autochtones de l’Amérique du Nord à se dérouler en Ontario et a généré des centaines de soumissions de jeunes Autochtones. Le nom « Debwe » provient de la langue anishinaabe et The name ‘Debwe’ comes from the Anishinaabe language, meaning ‘the one who speaks the truth,’ reflecting sportsbased reconciliation initiatives referenced in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada 94 Calls to Action and supported by the Games. The turtle is also an important symbol in Indigenous culture, representing the connection to the earth, The Creator and one another. Representing the distinct Indigenous landscape of Ontario and the North, Debwe was inspired by his Oji-Cree roots and the Seven Grandfather Teachings, reflecting the life lessons and inspiration the North American Indigenous Games provide to the Indigenous community and youth. signifie « celui qui dit la vérité », reflétant les initiatives de réconciliation basées sur le sport mentionnées dans les 94 appels à l’action de la Commission de vérité et réconciliation du Canada et soutenus par les Jeux. La tortue est aussi un symbole important dans la culture autochtone, représentant la relation avec la terre, le Créateur et nos semblables. Représentant le paysage autochtone distinctif de l’Ontario et du Nord, l’inspiration de Debwe provient de ses racines Oji-Cris et des sept enseignements sacrés, reflétant les leçons de vie et l’inspiration que les Jeux autochtones de l’Amérique du Nord offrent à la communauté et à la jeunesse autochtones.
