The Good Fight hits mark

- Johanna Schneller

The show: The Good Fight, Season 1, Episode 3 The moment: The Trump voter Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) works for Adrian (Delroy Lindo) and Barbara (Erica Tazel) at a prestigious African-American-owned law firm, which has contracts with companies that get tax breaks for hiring Black-owned businesses. A rival Black-owned firm — one that’s Trump-friendly — is threatening those contracts.

Barbara needs to find colleagues who voted for Trump. There’s only one: Julius (Michael Boatman). Adrian is surprised by the news — Julius, really? “Did he say why?” Adrian asks. “Conservative politics,” Barbara answers, shrugging.

“Well, Kanye (West) voted for Trump,” Adrian says.

“No he didn’t,” Barbara says. “He said he would have, if he had voted. But I promised Julius he wouldn’t be ostracized.”

“Of course not,” Adrian says. They both look off and sigh.

The firm keeps its contracts. But the head of the rival firm warns Julius, “You are in for a lonely life, my friend.” Julius’s smile fades as he notices colleagues avoiding his gaze.

On their previous show The Good Wife and on this, its spinoff, series creators Robert and Michelle King have been excellent at two things: ripped-from-the-headlines plots and layered moral quandaries.

But even they couldn’t have guessed how prescient they’d be. The Good Fight aired on W Network. Johanna Schneller is a media connoisseur who zeroes in on pop-culture moments. She usually appears Monday through Thursday.
