TRANSITION YOUR DECOR TO FALL

Summer’s not over yet, but the signs of early autumn are in the air. Days are a little shorter, evenings a little crisper and the transition to back-to-school and autumn routines are right around the corner. It’s time to trade out the tropical kitsch of p

Think layers

Layer textures and patterns that subtly transition to fall with colours that are a little richer and textures that are more rustic.

An easy way to transition from summer to fall is to incorporate warmer colours and fabrics. Try switching out summer pillows for cosy materials, such as knits or heavier silks and linens, and added details such as on-trend fringe, oversize floral patterns and a warm blush pink.

Bring the outside in

Including natural elements is a simple and inexpensive way to embrace the seasons and savour summer a little longer. Take a walk outside to see what changes are happening in your garden. Echo the natural world. Branches and sticks bundled together in a jar are easy ways to bring the outside in. A rustic wood bowl or tray of fruit such as pears is fresh and seasonal.

Remember, the end of summer doesn’t mean you have to hide away reminders of days at the beach or lake. Make summer memories last by mixing in found driftwood and rocks into your decor. Large jars are great for corralling found objects.

Prepare for — gasp — heavier jackets

Cooler temperatures require light sweaters or jackets that you can easily grab on the way out the door. Hang a shaker style peg rack in your entry to keep things tidy and accessible.

This handsome rail made with wood and brass hardware is a stylish spot to hang something practical or decorative, such as a bundle of dried flowers.

Go brass at the table

An easy way to incorporate the season is on your dining table. A late summer tablescape can include new napkins, dishes or glassware in earthier colours or, for a fresh look, mix in on-trend brass cutlery and blush pinks together with wood serving pieces that you can find at stores such as HomeSense and Ikea.

Prep the porch

Switch out the doormat on a front porch for something new and swap out urns full of plants that have seen better days for something fresh. Purple flowering cabbages and jewel-toned moms look great and can withstand cooler temperatures. On a balcony or deck, have a basket of wool throws ready to snuggle up with when evening air turns cooler and cluster candles together on a side table to cast a warm glow long into the evening.

Get cosy

As evenings get a little cooler, you may want to have a cosy throw at the ready. Something soft and lightweight that you can pull up around you while watching TV or reading. The hand-quilted Kanpur throw from local Toronto-based shop Black Rooster Décor is perfect for late summer evenings.

Kanpur Throw, $87.89, Black Rooster Décor.

Adjust the senses

Late summer light seems softer as August fades and the sun sets a little earlier. Embrace the changing light by adding more candles to your space. Perhaps a change in fragrance is also in order. Switch out summer fragrances for earthy options such as fig.
