‘I could spend six months a year up there legally,’ the veteran film star says

A year after filming his latest film, Kodachrome — shot mostly in and around Toronto — actor Ed Harris is musing about spending a lot more time north of the border, thanks to U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Good God, help us all,” the veteran actor bemoaned at one point.

“It’s a f---ing nightmare,” Harris said, when pressed to elaborate further.

“I was online the other day looking at property in Nova Scotia. I could spend six months a year up there legally,” Harris added.

In the film, directed by Toronto native Mark Raso, Harris plays Ben, a world-famous photographer dying of cancer with one last chance to reconcile with his son Matt (Jason Sudeikis) after 20 years of estrangement.

An opportunity arises when the last film lab in the United States to process good old-fashioned Kodachrome film announces it’s closing forever. Ben persuades Matt to accompany him, along with four undeveloped rolls, on a road trip to Kansas.

Though the father and son have a tense relationship, it was not so on set, Harris noted, saying the two played catch to get to know each other.

“I always bring my baseball glove with me, so it was just fun to share that with somebody,” said the fourtime Oscar nominee.

The film was shot last year and the two actors found they were on the same page politically. “We have similar interests. It was a very political time, it was during the campaign, so there was a lot to talk about. We had similar views about what was taking place,” Harris, 66, said.

Harris made sure he saw Raso’s 2014 breakout film, Copenhagen, be- fore deciding to join his latest film.

“(Raso) obviously knew how to make a movie, tell a story,” Harris said.

For his part, Raso was impressed by the tenacity Harris demonstrated during a crucial scene lying in a hospital bed.

“When we were shooting the hospital stuff, Ed got into that bed at 9 in the morning and came out at midnight. He was lying in the bed the entire day, not getting up for lunch. I think he got up maybe a couple of times to go to the washroom. That was impressive. It was very eyeopening for me,” Raso said.
