-

A Symphony Born Out Of Success

IN AN ERA when the classical arts are facing profound challenges, the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra is defying the odds. It was, in fact, born out of popular demand, in response to the many theatregoers who longed to hear the music of Shen Yun—the phenomenally successful dance production—exclusively in concert form. Today, their wish has come true. Since debuting at Carnegie Hall in 2012, the New York-based orchestra has performed to great acclaim around the world. The Five Elements

THE FIVE ELEMENTS THEORY, at the root of traditional Chinese medicine, has influenced many aspects of China’s ancient culture, including music therapy. The Five Elements (metal, wood, water, fire, and earth) correspond to the five major organs (lungs, liver, kidneys, heart, and spleen). They also correlate to the five notes on the Chinese pentatonic scale. Thus, music arranged harmoniously can help balance our internal organs, calm our mind, and nourish our soul.

Ancient Chinese Instruments, Enchanting Melodies

SHEN YUN captures the spirit of China in a way never heard before—combining the beauty of Eastern instruments with the grandeur of a full Western orchestra. Ancient Chinese instruments share a deep connection with heaven and earth. The delicate notes of the pipa evoke a sense of celestial realms; the enchanting sound of the 4,000-year-old erhu mimics the human voice. They lead the melody amid a Western orchestra, creating a profound musical experience.
