NFL: Goodell’s $250M contract goodies include private jet for life: report

- ANDY CLAYTON

Embattled NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is asking for lifetime use of a private jet as part of his new compensation package, ESPN reported Sunday.

Goodell’s current contract runs out in March of 2019 and the commish and owners are currently working on a five-year contract extension.

ESPN, citing sources familiar with the negotiations, reported that Goodell is also looking for lifetime health insurance for his family. That’s on top of the reported $50 million (U.S.) he wants in salary per year.

The NFL’s compensation committee —which includes Giants co-owner John Mara — will hold a conference call Monday to “discuss and further push ahead the proposed extension” for Goodell, per ESPN.

Monday’s conference call comes on the heels of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones making moves to block Goodell’s extension.

As the Daily News’ Gary Myers has reported, Jones is angry with the commissioner over the NFL’s sixgame ban over his star running back Ezekiel Elliott over domestic violence allegations. After losing the latest appeal, Elliott can’t rejoin the Cowboys until Christmas Eve, barring a ruling in his favour on Dec. 1. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Elliott plans to train somewhere outside the United States.

Jones has even threatened legal action against his fellow owners if they go through with the plan to extend Goodell’s pact.

The Cowboys owner, who had worked his way onto the six-owner compensation committee as an unofficial member, had his nonvoting membership revoked last week, the New York Times reported.

Jones wants Goodell’s contract to be approved by the full ownership group.

“The committee that basically negotiates salary with our commissioner is taking the view, especially the chairman, that they in a limited group can complete this agreement. I disagree,” Jones said on a Dallas radio show.

ESPN reported that one NFL owner called the salary Goodell is seeking “offensive.”

Goodell is dealing with a league in turmoil in 2017. Along with the divisive national anthem protests, the NFL is suffering from a rash of injuries to star players, growing concerns about concussions and CTE, sagging TV ratings and lousy games.

He has reportedly earned more than $212 million since he was elected commissioner in 2006.
