‘I wouldn’t have survived without The Scott Mission’
Noone ever thinks they could lose everything and become homeless, but Michael’s story is far more common than most realize.
Before finding himself on the streets, Michael was a family man with a secure corporate job, a spouse and a warm place to live. His life quickly unfolded when personal problems arose. The stress left him tossing sleeplessly night after night and his performance at work soon suffered. The hammer finally came down the day Michael fell asleep in an important meeting. He was dismissed from his job.
Michael’s life quickly spiralled out of control. His wife left him and he suddenly found himself destitute and homeless. Fortunately, The Scott Mission was there to provide him with a warm meal and safe shelter, and to help steer him back to stability.
“I wouldn’t have survived without The Scott Mission,” Michael says. “What I needed most was a safe home. I got help physically, but also spiritually and mentally through the kindness of the people here.”
The Scott Mission has been a refuge of support and guidance for more than seven decades. Many times, it all begins with a simple meal. And it only takes $4.25 to provide a meal and so much more to those who come through the doors. The Scott Mission operates largely through the generosity of individual donors and the work of the many volunteers who give their time to help others.
In addition to financial support, there are many ways for the public to get involved with the Mission’s work: Thousands of volunteers log in more than 25,000 hours annually. There are volunteer positions to help serve meals in the dining room, assist in the food and clothing bank and help in the Men’s Shelter. Food and clothing donations are always needed. Or you can simply make a one-time or recurring monthly donation as an individual, on behalf of an organization or in tribute to someone you love.
For Michael, like so many others, the day he entered the doors of The Scott Mission searching for a simple meal and a safe place to stay was the day his life began anew.
