What to hear, see and do at IDS2018
The three-day Interior Design Show opened for its 20th year Thursday night with the annual pre-show gala where design luminaries — and fans — plus local celebs, media and brand representatives meet, greet and are the first to see this year’s exhibits. Friday The day was for trade members only. This year’s theme is the intersection of design and architecture with civic life and the and the social fabric. Saturday The show opens to the public with 300 exhibitors demonstrating exceptional design and design concepts, and products.
The Studio North & Prototype marketplace will showcase more than 65 Canadian and international designers of custom and limited-edition furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles and surfaces.
As well, there will be works by design students from Ryerson University.
Also on Saturday, a panel conversation will include former IDS director and current president of the Design Exchange Shauna Levy, designer Jonathan Friedman of Partisans (the firm responsible for Toronto’s Bar Raval and the upcoming Gusto) and Marc Ryan, co-founder of urban design and landscape architecture studio Public Work.
The very celebrated George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg sit down for a conversation about their reach across interior environments, product collaborations, textiles, lighting design and architecture.
Later Saturday, interior and textile designer Kathryn Ireland — of Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators — will be on stage.
Celeb designer Tommy Smythe and Richard Ouellette, creative director of Montreal-based architecture, build and design firm Les Ensembliers, will conduct a designers’ “masterclass.” Sunday Brian Gluckstein talks trends with House and Home publisher Lynda Reeves, who will also hold court with uber-designer Karim Rashid.
