What to hear, see and do at IDS2018

The three-day Interior Design Show opened for its 20th year Thursday night with the annual pre-show gala where design luminaries — and fans — plus local celebs, media and brand representa­tives meet, greet and are the first to see this year’s exhibits. Friday The day was for trade members only. This year’s theme is the intersecti­on of design and architectu­re with civic life and the and the social fabric. Saturday The show opens to the public with 300 exhibitors demonstrat­ing exceptiona­l design and design concepts, and products.

The Studio North & Prototype marketplac­e will showcase more than 65 Canadian and internatio­nal designers of custom and limited-edition furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles and surfaces.

As well, there will be works by design students from Ryerson University.

Also on Saturday, a panel conversati­on will include former IDS director and current president of the Design Exchange Shauna Levy, designer Jonathan Friedman of Partisans (the firm responsibl­e for Toronto’s Bar Raval and the upcoming Gusto) and Marc Ryan, co-founder of urban design and landscape architectu­re studio Public Work.

The very celebrated George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg sit down for a conversati­on about their reach across interior environmen­ts, product collaborat­ions, textiles, lighting design and architectu­re.

Later Saturday, interior and textile designer Kathryn Ireland — of Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators — will be on stage.

Celeb designer Tommy Smythe and Richard Ouellette, creative director of Montreal-based architectu­re, build and design firm Les Ensemblier­s, will conduct a designers’ “masterclas­s.” Sunday Brian Gluckstein talks trends with House and Home publisher Lynda Reeves, who will also hold court with uber-designer Karim Rashid.
