Tax evasion affects our quality of life

-

Re Tax evasion doesn’t seem like provinces’ priority, Feb. 3 Marco Chown Oved’s report tells a sad tale of a system in disarray, with our Canadian provinces and territories unable, or even unwilling, to get together to fashion an effective system to deal with the huge sums of money hidden away from the CRA via multiple tax havens and tax dodges.

As Mr. Oved reports, there appears to have been little or no action taken since the release of both the Panama Papers and the Paradise Papers to put an end to these questionable practices which hide billions of dollars that, fairly taxed, would add millions of dollars to the public purse; all money that could be put to work on behalf of the Canadian public.

It appears clear that our various provincial authorities are more attuned to their own interests and priorities than they are interested in securing a fair deal for the public; how short-sighted can you get? Details in the article show officialdom at all levels to be negligent and even perhaps immoral in a wide range of financial dealings, all of which have a negative effect on the public purse and hence inevitably on our quality of life.

Just how long do we suppose it would take the CRA and the provinces to land on top of any ordinary member of the working public if they tried, with the paltry means at their disposal, to finesse even a few potential tax dollars? Eric Balkind, Guelph
