Re Elliott warns Conservatives not to gamble on

rookie leader, Feb. 6 Imagine if Jane Doe, a Harvard-educated, middle-aged, very affluent lawyer, born in Canada but long domiciled in the U.S., was to declare she was running to be Ontario PC leader and premier.

She has no political experience. She has never held any office — municipally, provincially or federally. Would the PC party or the people of Ontario take her candidacy seriously? Not a chance.

But if the person is named Caroline Mulroney and claiming to be “fresh” and “new” and the only person who can “get it done,” it becomes a different ball game. Conservatives are touting her as star potential that the voters will find very attractive.

Have we sunk to such depths that we will take politically inexperienced people with a famous name to potentially lead our province? Alan Hicken, Millgrove, Ont. Like father, like daughter. Caroline Mulroney is seeking the top position when first entering politics. Like her father, Brian, she has enough chutzpah to vie for the leadership of a Conservative party having absolutely no legislative experience. No matter what other qualifications she brings to the race, she is an inexperienced politician and, because of that, I don’t think she is qualified to lead a governing party.
