Former refugee should be deported

-

Re Man repeatedly failed by Canada, Paradkar, Feb. 15

I feel very sorry for this young man, Abdoul Abdi, who is likely to be deported to a country he doesn’t know, where they speak a language he doesn’t speak or likely even understand.

However, I really can’t see how this could qualify as racism. Here’s a young man who is not a Canadian citizen (Shree Paradkar blames it on the Department of Community Services, huh?), was registered late for school by his aunt, “scooped” up by child protective services and got “sucked into illegal activities.” Ms. Paradkar blames his activities on being bounced around among many, perhaps abusive, homes.

If we are to excuse Mr. Abdi for his illegal activities because of his situation and upbringing, we would then have to excuse every other orphan and/or ward of the state because they would have similar situations from which they are coming.

It is unclear how he ended up in Canada with his sister and aunt. What hap- pened to his parents? Where are they now? Why was he in a refugee camp when he was born in Saudi Arabia to a Saudi father?

What is clear to me is this man has committed criminal acts and the country no longer welcomes him. If this man had been white, I doubt there would have been any difference in treatment. He does not appear to be a contributing member of society and needs to be returned to his home, cruel as that may be. Rita Maio, Woodbridge
