A Celebration of Life will be held for Howard Hall on Tuesday after the former Scugog mayor passed away on Wednesday.

Hall, who served as Scugog’s top politician from 1988 to 1997, died on Feb. 28 at the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital. He was 88.

He successfully ran for Port Perry council for the first time in the late 1960s — prior to the formation of Durham Region — and then returned to the political arena in 1985 as a councillor before taking the mayor’s chains in 1988.

He was defeated by Doug Moffatt in the 1997 municipal election.

Outside of the council chambers, Hall operated the House of Howard appliance and furniture shop in Port Perry for more than three decades.

His community involvement away from politics included serving on the Community Memorial Hospital Board (the Port Perry hospital, prior to its 1990s merger with Uxbridge and then, later, amalgamation with Lakeridge Health Corporation) and then the Lakeridge Health board.

He was also a supporter of youth activities — the Port Perry Scouts and local figure skating club — as well as the Port Perry MoJacks.

He’s predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Zula.

Visitation began at Port Perry United Church on Sunday and will continue on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A celebration of Hall’s life will follow on Tuesday at the church, beginning at11a.m. with Reverend Elaine Hall officiating.

Visitors are asked to consider donations to the Port Perry United Church or Port Perry Hospital Foundation in lieu of flowers.
