IN A FEW MINUTES, CARNAGE AND AN ARREST

- JESSE MCLEAN AND MOIRA WELSH INVESTIGATIVE REPORTERS

About 1:10 p.m. Monday, a van mounted the curb on Yonge St. at Finch Ave. and hurtled along the sidewalk, mowing down pedestrians. The incident, which covered 2.2 km in a few minutes, ended with 10 dead, at least 15 injured and one arrest.

1) Driver jumps the sidewalk at southwest corner of Finch and Yonge, immediately killing one pedestrian. A worker from a nearby restaurant says she ran outside to see a young woman lying on the ground, with two men performing CPR. “Her eyes were blank,” the worker says.

2) The van barrels down the western sidewalk, running down victims. “He was aiming,” says witness Ali Shaker. One body, covered with an orange tarp, lies on the bloodstained sidewalk at Tolman St. Another body lies a half-block south.

3) The driver crashes into a bus shelter then uproots a fire hydrant before continuing south.

4) The van veers back onto Yonge, cutting off driver Dainis Cevers, and hits a man trying to cross the street. “He went flying in the air,” says Cevers. The man’s body lands near the curb.

5) At Empress Ave., a witness says multiple people were hit. Henry Yang says he saw a leg detached from a body. A woman’s lower body is crushed. Another man “had his brain split open.”

6) Witnesses see several bodies at Mel Lastman Square.

7) After fleeing the van, the man gets into a standoff with an officer. “I have a gun in my pocket,” he yells. “Shoot me in the head.” The officer arrests the man.
