MASSIVE VIGIL TONIGHT

Tens of thousands, including PM Justin Trudeau, expected to attend the 7 p.m. ceremony in Mel Lastman Square, A4

City and interfaith groups are co-hosting a vigil tonight at 7 p.m. at Mel Lastman Square (5100 Yonge St.), near the site of Monday’s tragedy.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to be in attendance, as are Premier Kathleen Wynne, Mayor John Tory, Gov. Gen. Julie Payette, Ontario Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard and federal Conservative party Leader Andrew Scheer.

On Saturday, Rabbi Eva Goldfinger, who is scheduled to speak at tonight’s vigil, said she wants to be there to support a city in mourning. “We have to do it together.” Those attending the vigil or travelling in the area are being advised to take the TTC, with 25,000 people expected to attend and rolling road closures throughout the day.

The southbound lanes on Yonge St. will be closed from Park Home Blvd. and Empress Ave. to North York Blvd. between 8 a.m. and 11:30 p.m., with intermittent closures between Finch and Sheppard Aves. Visitors can access the vigil via Sheppard, North York Centre and Finch stations.

In an email to constituents, Tory encouraged everyone to attend the vigil.

“The horrific events of April 23 have shown the world how Toronto responds to tragedy,” he said, noting those who had already donated to the #TorontoStrong fund. As of Saturday, the donation tally was $1.7 million.
