Police probing weekend deaths
Gunmen flee the scene of downtown shooting in black Honda Civic
Police are investigating three deaths over the Victoria Day weekend, after two men were fatally shot in separate incidents on Sunday and a set of human remains was discovered in Scarborough.
Officers responded to the first scene at 3 a.m. on Sunday, after callers reported hearing gunshots in the Scarborough neighbourhood of Milford Haven Dr. and Greenock Ave., near Ellesmere Ave. and Markham Rd. Mohammed Gharda, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene. An 18-year-old man was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds in what police believe was a targeted attack.
On Sunday evening, police responded to calls about a downtown shooting.
They said three gunmen fled the area of Yonge and Wellington Sts. after fatally shooting a 28-year-old man.
The victim, Jaiden Jackson, was leaving Pick 6ix restaurant around 9 p.m. with a woman, whom police have not yet identified but believe was wearing a pink or orange dress.
The pair crossed to the north side of Wellington St. and headed west on foot toward Jackson’s car.
As they were walking, a black four-door Honda Civic with a sunroof drove south on Jordan St. and turned left onto Wellington. The car proceeded the wrong way on Wellington St., heading eastbound before making a quick U-turn to approach Jackson and the woman. Police say two armed men then got out of the car and began shooting.
Jackson fled on foot into an underground parking garage at 18 Wellington St. W., followed by the gunmen and the Honda.
All three men then allegedly fired at him before they got back into the car, reversed up the ramp and continued westbound before turning south onto Bay St.
Jackson was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead later that evening. Police are looking to speak to the woman who was with Jackson on Sunday.
Gharda and Jackson are the city’s 30th and 31st homicides of the year.
Investigators have not released any suspect identifica- tions or descriptions for either of the shootings, and are appealing to the public to contact the homicide unit with tips at 416-808-7400, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222TIPS.
Ontario Provincial Police were also called for a death investigation on Sunday. Just before midnight, the OPP confirmed its Toronto detachment was investigating after unidentified human remains were discovered in Scarborough.
The remains were found off Hwy. 401 near Morningside Ave.
The victim’s gender and the apparent circumstances of their death have not been disclosed.
Investigators blocked off the right lane of the Morningside Ave. southbound ramp to Hwy. 401 westbound. OPP spokesperson Lauren Ball said the ramp would remain closed until Tuesday.
