Teen Denis Shapovalov becomes top Canadian in world tennis rankings with French Open around the corner.

Denis Shapovalov is the topranked Canadian tennis player.

The 19-year-old product of Richmond Hill moved up three spots to No. 26 in the ATP World Tour’s rankings released Monday, leapfrogging fellow Canadian Milos Raonic.

Raonic, from Thornhill, dropped six spots to 28th after withdrawing from last week’s Italian Open and dropping out of the upcoming French Open.

Shapovalov has a 17-12 record in 2018, including a straight sets loss to eventual Italian Open champion Rafael Nadal in the round of 16 at the clay-court tournament on May 17. He also made the semifinals of the Madrid Open, where he lost to Alexander Zverev in straight sets on May 12.

Raonic has struggled with injuries, last playing on May 10 where he lost to Shapovalov at the Madrid Open.

Nadal rose to No. 1 in the world with his Madrid title, with Roger Federer, resting until closer to Wimbledon, moving down one. Zverev stayed at No. 3.

French Open qualifying opened Monday, with Montreal teen Felix Auger-Aliassime beating South Africa’s Lloyd Harris — 6-4, 6-3. The 17-yearold Auger-Aliassime, who fired six aces, will face Jaume Munar of Spain in the next round on Wednesday. Vancouver’s Filip Peliwo lost to France’s Constant Lestienne — 7-5, 6-2. Peter Polansky of Thornhill takes on Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos on Tuesday.

Three Canadians have a shot at the main draw in women’s qualifying, which starts Tuesday. Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., faces Slovenia’s Dalila Jakupovic, Montreal’s Francoise Abanda will play Italy’s Martina Trevisan and Carol Zhao of Richmond Hill takes on Italy’s Francesca Schiavone.
