Bear in mind, change might be for the worse

-

Let’s look at the records of the parties and what their election promises really mean:

Doug Ford, Rob’s brother, whom the Conservative party chose as their leader, was a Toronto councillor while his brother was mayor and he supported Rob’s antics and actions including closing libraries and swimming pools, and raising TTC fares. His election campaign to cut taxes on gas by 10 cents a litre means a savings for the common working people he says he supports of $3 on a 30 litre fill up. Individually not much of a savings, but multiplied by two million individuals, a huge loss in government revenue. This is revenue needed to pay for the services we need and want — health care, education, transit, climate change initiatives and more.

Let’s remember too the policies and actions of the previous Conservative government under Mike Harris. Tax cuts lead to hospital and school closures, cuts to culture, removal of environmental protection laws and removal of funding for TTC. Harris bought our votes with a jar of loonies, don’t let Ford get away with the same trick.

Compare this to the Liberal government’s record in office under Wynne — climate change initiatives such as supporting alternative energy start ups and shutting coal plants, increasing affordable child-care spaces, revising school sex education curriculum (with the option for parents opposed to have children exempted), extending pharmacare to give free medication for children and seniors, as well as funding the TTC.

Let’s think before we simply vote for a change — the change might be for the worse. Barbara Sternberg, Toronto
